The warning follows an April audit of Tam's clinic, where inspectors uncovered troubling hygiene lapses and inadequately sterilized dental equipment. "People with HIV, hepatitis B, or hepatitis C may not exhibit symptoms for decades, making testing imperative for those at risk to access necessary treatments," Dr. Gupta stated. The lack of comprehensive patient records complicates outreach, as there are no reliable means to contact those who may have been exposed.
A Pattern of Concern
This incident is not the first of its kind in Australia. In 2018, around 10,000 patients were urged to undergo blood testing after similar infection control failures at a dental practice in Haberfield. More recently, last October, another clinic in Mortdale prompted a testing advisory after its dentist faced suspension for breaching health regulations.
