1. Hydrate with Water-Rich Foods

From the age of 12 months, frozen lollies made from diluted fruit juice or plain water can provide relief. Older children can benefit from snacks like watermelon, oranges, and hydrating soups. For formula-fed babies, a small amount of cooled boiled water can supplement their regular feeds.

2. Reapply Sunscreen Frequently

Experts caution that daily-use sunscreens can fail to deliver on their promises. Even water-resistant formulas require reapplication, especially after swimming or sweating. Opt for a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and a minimum of four stars, applying it roughly 30 minutes before sun exposure. Remember to cover all vulnerable areas, including the tops of the feet, ears, neck, and shoulders. Sunscreen is not recommended for infants under six months; keeping them completely shaded is the best approach.

Avoid covering pushchairs with muslin or blankets, as this can obstruct airflow and create heat traps. 4. Dress for Comfort and Protection

Selecting appropriate clothing is essential for heat protection. Opt for loose-fitting apparel to allow airflow while ensuring that fabrics also provide sun protection. Dark colors often offer better UVA and UVB absorption than lighter shades. Swimwear boasting UPF 50 certification should be a staple during aquatic adventures. Using wide-brimmed hats and wraparound sunglasses can also shield delicate skin and eyes from harmful rays.

5. Create a Cool Sleeping Environment

A restful sleep is vital, and a stuffy bedroom can hinder this. Strategically lower the temperature by closing blinds during the day and utilizing electric fans—just ensure they aren’t directly blowing on children to prevent dehydration. A cool bath before bedtime can help lower their body temperature, setting the stage for a peaceful night's rest. Keeping bedding minimal and allowing for cross-ventilation through slightly open windows can also enhance comfort.
