In a groundbreaking development for prostate cancer treatment, thousands of men in England will soon benefit from a high-powered precision radiotherapy, dramatically reducing their treatment sessions from 20 to just five. This innovative approach, known as Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR), promises to deliver more effective targeting of the disease while significantly minimizing side effects.
The NHS announced that this advanced form of radiotherapy, which has previously been used to treat patients with lung and brain cancers, will now be available to low- and intermediate-risk prostate cancer patients—marking a pivotal shift in cancer care.
Every year, approximately 55,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in England, with around 17,500 classified as low or intermediate risk. Projections indicate that about 3,500 of these men may opt for the new treatment, as many currently choose active monitoring due to the slow-growing nature of their cancer.
NHS England has set an ambitious timeline, stating that they expect all 48 radiotherapy centers nationwide to initiate the rollout of this treatment “within weeks.” National Clinical Director for Cancer, Professor Peter Johnson, highlighted the significance of this advancement: “This technology allows us to focus a powerful and precise beam of radiotherapy directly on the cancer, limiting the damage to healthy cells. Delivering the treatment in 15 fewer doses will enable men to return to their normal lives much more swiftly.”
According to Amy Rylance from Prostate Cancer UK, the implementation of targeted radiotherapy is a momentous update, alleviating the burdens faced by patients and their families. “This transformative treatment is set to change the lives of thousands, and we are hopeful that it will eventually extend to more patients,” she said.
Trials assessing the efficacy of SABR for high-risk prostate cancer patients are already underway. Among the participants is Edwin Lambert, a 70-year-old from Suffolk, who was diagnosed in January 2025. After experiencing adverse side effects from hormone therapy, he found the new radiotherapy approach to be more manageable. Edwin successfully targeted his prostate and surrounding lymph nodes, noting, “This treatment was an absolute godsend.”
Reflecting on his experience, he remarked that while many undergoing traditional radiotherapy struggled visibly, he was able to resume his activities, such as participating in an archaeological dig, just five weeks post-treatment. “I saw men who looked dreadful,” he added. “For me, the new approach was easier to deal with.”
As healthcare providers look toward the future, the availability of cutting-edge treatments like SABR signals hope and progress in the fight against prostate cancer, enhancing the quality of life for many.
